Warmachine and Hordes Circle Battle Report: Jeffcon 5 - Kaya 3 (CotW) vs. Helynna (Forges)

For the finals, I was paired against Joel running Helynna with two Hyperions and Goreshade 4 in Shadows with Nyss, Strike Force, and Infiltrators.

Kaya 3 is fine into both of these, as my Argus’ are immune to cold and can safely make melee attacks into Goreshade’s feat as well as just being able to spray down scads of guys.

The Helynna list looks like a great target for a Synergy caster, and it’s Spread the Net so the colossals are going to have problems with Scenario.

I dropped Kaya, and to my surprise Joel dropped Helynna.

I won the roll for first again (go +1 from theme!) and opted to go first.

Circle turn 1:

Everything runs up to just outside Hyperion walk and shoot range, and Kaya moves up and casts Fog of War and Soothing Song to clear off fury.

I set up Shifting Stones on the left to be able to contest the zone, and on the right to contest the flag.

Retribution turn 1:

He’s deployed his Phoenix outside of control range, but he’s got so many Arcanists that the focus isn’t an issue. Everything runs to just outside of my charge ranges.

Circle turn 2:

I start activating Argus’ on the right, moving, casting Winter’s Coat for free, and then repositioning forward. One Argus contests the flag.

We check, and the Phoenix is almost two inches outside of Helynna’s control again, so I decide to chance a Crit Freeze with an Argus to see if I can land one of the two.

I get it, and end up getting four boosted sprays into it and leaving it stationary with no way to shake next round.

Because it’s stationary, I’m not worried about getting Hand of Destruction on Kaya so she moves central, casts Soothing Song, and camps four.

Retribution turn 2:

Joel decides that his only chance is assassinating Kaya. He gets a really good Deafen spray on her, which I transfer, and then only hits her twice more with his Hyperions after rolling up 9 shots between them and the big cannons as well.

Helynna tries to clear off the Argus contesting the flag, but can’t and Joel concedes as I will score two points this turn and will only need to spray down an Arcanist and Sylyss to take his flag with my Blackclad next turn to score up 5 - 0.

Victory for Circle!

Joel and I both agreed that Goreshade was the correct drop here, and in fact he said as much during deployment when he was wondering how he had managed to forget that we were playing Spread the Net.

And with that, Jeffcon was over and I qualified for Iron Gauntlet 2019! A big thanks to all of my opponents for the fantastic experience and to Jeff for running such a smooth event. I haven’t seen a five round event take less than 11 hours in a long time and this one managed it.
