Battle Report 134 - Mox Invitational Round 2: The Dreamer (Menagerie) vs. Baldur 2 (Bones)

Prologue:

To see both of my lists and my pairing thoughts, check this first. 

For round 2, I was paired up with Brendan Roy of Privateer Press Studio fame. He was playing.....CIRCLE (borrowed from someone else, hence the lack of paint).

He had Baldur 2 and Krueger 2, and I was 100% certain I could not drop infantry spam into that. Also, Dreamer has double Wraithbane in her list, which is a must for the Baldur 2 matchup. 

I ended up with Dreamer, he ended up with Baldur 2. I chose to ADR out one unit of Dread Rots for a pair of Crabbits, and then I took the Sacrifice and Shroud Arcana.

I won the roll off and opted to go first. I was really hoping to take advantage of the forests to create opportunities for me to outthreaten the big stone monkeys. 

 

Weird to be playing AGAINST the Circle list. 

 

Grymkin turn 1:

Everything runs up. I stick Artifice of Deviation out there and put Mirage on a Skin and Moans since the Wyrd is out of range this turn. 

I can't really protect my Dread Rots or my Gremlin Swarms this game, but they'll give me corpses I guess? 

 
 

Circle turn 1:

Eveything moves up. Potshots are taken at my Dread Rots but fail to kill. 

The Wrath screams up the table, and Megalith tramples up and puts Roots of the Earth on it. 

Baldur moves up, Roots of the Earths himself, and casts a Rock Wall so that I can't get to his Woldwrath. 

His stones port up around the Celestial Fulcrum. 

Baldur takes 1 from his Wurm token. 

 
 

Grymkin turn 2:

I decide not to upkeep any spells since the Woldwyrd is around and I need to move that Artifice of Deviation somewhere else. 

The right hand Cage Rager is within sixteen inches of Megalith though, and so I run him up and Abyssal Gate the heavy towards me, cast Manifest Destiny, and camp a Fury. 

The Skin and Moans gets Enraged by Karianna and charges Megalith, killing him. 

I use my Gremlin Swarms to force Brendan to kill them to get to anything important. 

I make a wall of stuff in front of the Dreamer and call it a turn, fully expecting to lose at least one heavy. 

 
 

Circle turn 2:

The Woldwrath comes in and kills the Cage Rager to the box. The Fulcrum shoots some stuff, but Shield Guards keep it from doing too much damage. 

I lose all but one Gremlin Swarm, and I lose a few Dread Rots as well. Baldur Feats and puts down a wall template, taking a couple more damage but healing one with Fury. 

 
 

Grymkin turn 3:

I get Wraithbane on both Skin and Moans, and I get them both to PS 19 with Corpses and Enrage. That combined with Manifest Destiny is a dead Woldwrath. 

I'd sent the Death Knell in to get the Woldwrath in its bubble of no damage removal in case he didn't die, and I space Crabbits out around the Dreamer. 

 
 

Circle turn 3:

The left Mannikin unit sprays down the Crabbit in front of Dreamer and I pop the Shroud to protect her from anything except the other Mannikin unit sprays and the Fulcrum spray. 

The Fulcrum sprays and critical stationaries the middle Skin and Moans, and then Brendan puts every single attack he has left into it, including four from Baldur to kill it. Baldur casts Rock Wall to block the landing zone for the other Skin and Moans and puts Roots of the Earth on himself. 

The right hand Sentry unit kills Karianna, triggering Sorrowful Rampage. 

 
 

Grymkin turn 4:

I've just gotta kill that Fulcrum and I can get my Skin and Moans into Baldur. 

The Dreamer moves up, casts Wraithbane on the Skin and Moans, is missed by a Wyrd shot, and Manifest Destiny on herself, and is missed by a second Wyrd shot. 

The Cage Rager charges in at MAT 7 PS 18 thanks to Sorrowful Rampage, and kills off the Fulcrum. 

The Skin and Moans gets to Baldur, and with Manifest Destiny and three corpses puts him down in a couple of hits. 

 
 

Victory for the Grymkin

Post-Game Thoughts:

If Brendan hadn't have given me Megalith there, I think this game is actually incredibly hard for me and I have to start thinking about ways to just sort of deal with the Woldwrath at the very end of the game, which is not something I want to do. 

Circle seem like one of the strongest answers to Grymkin in the game, which is certainly something to consider. Looks like I'll have to keep my finger on the pulse of the latest craze from them after all!
