August Steamroller/Masters Prologue:

Last weekend I was able to attend a “local” steamroller (meaning I only had to drive 2.5 hours to it).

I hadn’t actually intended to go until the night before when I committed to bringing basically the entire Circle faction for a newer player to borrow, so I wasn’t exactly prepared with a reason to play the lists I played.

I took my Dreamer list that I’ve been playing with no modification and I also took a King of Nothing list that Jeff Olsen gave me with an ADR constructed by Jordan L. of the Mox Meta (told you! I wasn’t prepared at all!)

I’d like to take a look at my Dreamer list and talk about being prepared for the meta you are going into.

The Spokane meta has a lot of:

Retribution
Khador heavy spam
Cygnar gun heavy lists

There’s also one Circle player and another Grymkin player (although he was running the event).

TheDreamer

  • Skin and Moans
  • Skin and Moans
  • Cage Rager
  • Cage Rager
  • Crabbits x2

Death Knell

Karianna Rose
Gremlin Swarm
Gremlin Swarm
Gremlin Swarm
Gremlin Swarm

Dread Rots (min)
Dread Rots (min)
Twilight Sisters

ADR:
Crabbit x4
Rattler x2
Gorehound
Glimmer Imp

This is a very “balanced” beast brick, in that it has a lot of options into things that don’t skew to one extreme end or another in terms of infantry spam to armor bricks. For the larger Seattle meta, I believe this list was appropriately built. For the much more compact Spokane meta which skews very heavily towards beast bricks, I think that it would have been correct to change my ADR choice to have this:

ADR:
Crabbit x2
Skin and Moans
Rattler x2

I would also have changed the free points in my list to have both Crabbits be free and be able to play a point under so I could easily swap a Cage Rager out for a Skin and Moans or a min unit of Rots and the Twilight Sisters out for one if I felt like I really needed five heavies. This really ups the damage output of your list.

I don’t like taking out the Dread Rots unless I’m playing into electroleaps, since most of the matches I want to take with this list don’t bring a lot of corpses for me.

I really like double Rattler in the ADR since infantry spam can be a problem for this list and they single handedly make that an easy matchup since there are very few units an Enraged Rattler under Manifest Destiny cannot take down, especially with the Death Knell as back up to prevent tough checks.

I wasn’t sure what to play King of Nothing into, and to be honest that’s a mistake for a list you want to bring to a tournament. It would have been much better to play my Heretic list since I know what it plays into, know how to play it, and understand the tricks that the list can play.

It also kills armor and dudes with equal ease and that’s nice.

I did not end up playing the King of Nothing list at all, although I think I was not correct in playing Dreamer round two and the King would have been a better play.

King of Nothing

  • Skin and Moans
  • Cage Rager
  • Rattler
  • Rattler
  • Gorehound
  • Gorehound
  • Crabbit x8

Gremlin Swarm
Gremlin Swarm
Gremlin Swarm
Gremlin Swarm
Karianna Rose

Dread Rots (min) x2

ADR:
Fright mare x3
Dread Rots (max)

Gonna be honest, I don’t know what this list plays into well (yet), and it really showed. I probably could have played it every game except the first (stupid birds eye messing with my day) and been fine?

I’m going to play this list almost exclusively for the next month or so to get a solid handle on it - I even painted my King of Nothing model!

The tournament composition ended up being:

3 Khador
2 Retribution
Circle
Grymkin (me!)
Menoth
