Battle Report 140 - August Steamroller Round 3: The Dreamer (Menagerie) vs. Old Witch 2 (Jaws of the Wolf)

Prologue:

The final round actually mattered a lot. If I won this game, I came 2nd based on Strength of Schedule. If I lost it, I came 6th.

My last opponent had Old Witch 2 and I honestly don't remember what his other list was.

I felt like playing my pretty list, so I did. Someday I'll finish painting up other Grymkin models ;)

(I'm actually not too far away from having my King of Nothing list painted)

I chose the Fuel Cache objective and my opponent chose Armory.

My Arcana were Fortunes Path (+1 to hit and damage) and Pandemonium. You might have noticed that I ADRed out a unit of Dread Rots for a Gorehound as well.

I lost the roll off and went second.

Khador turn 1:

He runs everything up at me. Reconstruct goes up on the left Kodiak.

Grymkin turn 1:

Dreamer goes Incorporeal this turn, and Artifice of Deviation and Mirage both go out and she charges the Old Witch.

Everything else runs, with me presenting only 4 Dread Rots to my opponent's sniper boat.

Khador turn 2:

Behemoth lobs shots at the Cage Rager, and the Snipers shoot at the Gorehound, nearly killing it.

He keeps everything way back, toeing Old Witch out of the killbox.

Grymkin turn 2:

I heal up the Gorehound and send him into the middle of the Widowmakers and then Sprint into the far square zone.

I also get Gremlin Swarms into the left zone to go after the Juggernaut.

I score a point and he does not.

Score: 1 - 0
Advantage Grymkin

Khador turn 3:

He kills off the Gorehound, and sends his Kodiak into my Skin and Moans behind the building and fails to kill it.

The Old Witch Blinds the Cage Rager and other Skin and Moans.

He moves the Kayazy on the right into me, and then he runs his poor Juggernaut up to me as a sacrifice.

At some point he misses in there, and I trigger Fortune's Path so that I am more accurate next turn.

He scores a point.

Score: 1 - 1
Tie!

Grymkin turn 3:

I shake blind off both beasts, and Manifest Destiny plus Swarms equals dead heavies and one dead Kayazy.

I am able to use the Large Phantasm to push the other Kayazy out of both zones and take the left one with the Twilight Sisters.

I stick the Cage Rager into the other zone, and run a Gremlin Swarm base to base with Old Witch to contest and also make her life hard.

I score two points to his none.

Score: 3 - 1
Advantage Grymkin

Khador turn 4:

He charges the Dreamer with his last Kayazy and misses.

Behemoth shoots some more at the Cage Rager.

Both contesting Dread Rots die to Vent Steam, and the Old Witch with a magical attack from Armory is able to kill the Swarm.

He can't contest the left zone, so we both score a point.

Score: 4 - 2
Advantage Grymkin

Grymkin turn 4:

Rinse and repeat time. I kill off the Kayazy with a Crabbit and throw models at his zone. I score two more points.

Score: 6 - 2
Advantage Grymkin

Khador turn 5:

He kills off the Death Knell and contests that zone, but he's unable to clear out the big Phantasm (without exposing the Old Witch to Gremlin Swarms) and I score again for the win.

Victory for the Grymkin!

Post-Game Thoughts:

Man I missed having guns. Pretty bland strategy that worked, kill a flank super hard and then score it over and over again until he couldn't deal with it.

Overall I came second, learned a lot, and had a great time - all good things :) I definitely need to remember my Phantasms more, which I am, and I've gotta think about my ADR for different events.

I think my base Dreamer list is more or less where I want it, and mostly I need to tune my ADR for the different metas I play in. I'm playing nothing but the King of Nothing for the next few weeks, hopefully that will boost my confidence in him and let me play him more!

Thanks for reading!
