Battle Report 165 - i5 Team Championship Round 1: The Dreamer (Menagerie) vs. Iron Mother (Destruction Initiative)

Alright, a week late but still here! Please bear in mind that I played this and the next two reports over a week ago, and Warmachine Weekend happened in that time, so these will be a little bit sparser than usual - I don't take notes of my games and memory starts to fade on details after a couple weeks usually.

I was very lucky to Captain a group of my friends at the i5 Team Championship in Portland, Oregon. We took an interesting team composition. I had Dreamer/Heretic, we also had Testament/Kreoss 1, Sorscha 1/Butcher 3, Karchev/Vlad 1, and Issyria/Vyros 2.

Lots of scary lists there, and we felt pretty well prepared for the likely lists we would see.

Round 1, we found one of the hardest teams in our way, and I got paired with Convergence. He had no magical weapons in his other list (Axis) and that mean that I was dropping Dreamer with Gremlin Swarms no matter what.

My opponent dropped Iron Mother and I played the Dreamer

I lost the roll off and was given the choice of sides. I picked the Shadow and Shroud Arcana.

Convergence turn 1:

Everything runs at me as far as it can, except the Reflex Sevitors which move up and dig in.

Grymkin turn 1:

Everything runs up into an Artifice, except for one Skin and Moans which I've put a solitary Crabbit next to. In order to get into range of it with the Axiom tow cables, he'll have to give me an Axiom.

Convergence turn 2:

Of course, I had failed to consider Fire Group. My opponent runs some Servitors up to me, and then hooks the Skin and Moans, which I shield guard, and then hooks again. A judge is called and the Skin and Moans gets pulled into the Servitor rather than the Axiom.

The other Axiom moves over and needs 12s to hit, getting the second one and pulling the Skin and Moans into melee. It leaves the Skin and Moans on 3 boxes, and he now has six Eliminator Servitors left to activate, needing two dice tens to hit thanks to flare from an Attunement Servitor. Three of the six hit and the Skin and Moans dies.

I do have the ability to get another Skin and Moans into the guilty Axiom though.

Grymkin turn 2:

I get a Gremlin Swarm into my Flag, and bait my opponent into counter-charging my Cage Rager with his Reflex Servitors to clear out my zone.

I Enfeeble the Axiom on the right and cast Manifest Destiny. I get a Skin and Moans into the Axiom and in command of the Skin and Moans AND only on one side of it, and proceed to leave it on about 10 boxes.

I score two points and call it good.

Score: 2 - 0
Advantage Grymkin

Convergence turn 3:

Mother feats to make her Axioms MAT 8, and repairs the left one with a directive. I also manage to kill the Diffuser with a Rattler free strike and spawn a medium Phantasm to contest the zone.

He rotates the left Axiom to get the Skin and Moans into melee with both arms and I trigger Shadow and place a Cage Rager in the Axioms back arc.

The Skin and Moans dies, and so does my Cage Rager. He runs a Servitor to contest my zone, but I score another point.

Score: 3 - 0
Advantage Grymkin

Grymkin turn 3:

My opponents team has won all other four games now, but I see a way to win this turn. I use my free Rager to kill the Axiom (making an elephant), and charge my Skin and Moans into the top zone to clear it.

Unfortunately, I get tunnel vision on the other Axiom and move my contesting Gremlin Swarm away from his flag to get into it, so I score two and my opponent scores one.

Score: 5 - 1
Advantage Grymkin

Convergence turn 4:

My opponent goes for the last ditch assassination. Mother can't get to the Dreamer, the Mitigator misses, and the Axiom, which is still Enfeebled gets a further -2 to hit from the Gremlin Swarms. He still hits a remarkable number of shots, but it isn't enough and I score two more points to his one and I win on Scenario.

Victory for the Grymkin!

Post-Game Thoughts:

It's hard to trade Axioms into Skin and Moans with Crabbits, especially with Enfeeble on one of them.

It was sad to lose the first round, and even worse we had the next round bye followed by lunch! Naturally we went to a sit down place and got to have a nice long meal. Many noble french fries lost their lives in this time.

Round two next!
