Battle Report 166 - i5 Team Championship Round 3: The Dreamer (Menagerie) vs. Madrak 2 (Band of Heroes)

For Round 2, we found another very good team full of guys from the Mox Boarding House and Tacoma meta.

A-mo and I have played twice before this event, and he has always been a great opponent. Unfortunately, he seems to think that I'm Kryptonite for him (although that does mean he is Superman...hmm...). I thought we were finally going to get to dodge each other at an event, but due to the pairing process, he and I ended up playing once more.

This meant that I got to scope out his sick Krielstone unit again though, seriously A-mo, get the rest of your army painted, I want to see everything look like those.

He had Madrak 2 and Gunnbjorn, and we've already tried the Gunnbjorn game, so I was pretty much expecting to see Madrak and I was right. I played Dreamer and picked Pandemonium and Desolation.

I won the roll off and opted to go first.

Grymkin Turn 1:

Everything runs, and the Rattler on the right gets Mirage. The pair of Rattlers are going to be huge in this matchup, being able to chew through entire units on their own if the tough checks go my way.

Trollbloods Turn 1:

A-mo is clever and runs up three Fennblades from each unit to bait me out. Everything else runs up and sticks behind the central wall protecting that flag.

Grymkin Turn 2:

A-mo is clever, but I've seen that trick before and I AIN'T FALLING FOR IT! Fennblades only really outthreat me if I let them Vengeance at me, and I am totally okay with three Fennblades getting at me.

Things move up and I take my flag. My Skin and Moans on the rest gets a Gremlin Swarm escort to block off most of the Fennblades from getting to my Skin and Moans.

Rattlers on both sides stand by to follow up, and I toss an Artifice of Deviation to force my opponent to pop the right hand Fennblades mini-feat in order to get at me.

Trollbloods Turn 2:

My bait is more successful than A-mo's was, largely because he doesn't really have a choice at this point, and so Fennblades come in and bounce off my heavies.

I pop my Desolation Arcana and put a Burning Earth down in the left zone, which I intend to abuse for the rest of the game.

He contests my flag with his Gobbers and calls it a turn.

Grymkin turn 3:

Time to start abusing my terrain!

I walk my Skin and Moans to the other side of the Burning Earth and kill the Gobbers.

With Manifest Destiny up, I'm able to send my Rattler across the table and murder ridiculous quantities of Fennblades.

I score a point here.

Score: 1 - 0
Advantage Grymkin

Trollbloods Turn 3:

A-mo didn't roll a single tough check on the previous turn, and his dice continue to fail him as it takes a ridiculous quantity of attacks to kill my Rattler, ending with the Earthborn killing it and Warpathing back.

Blood Fury is making the Fenns on both sides scary, and the Skin and Moans on the left gets beat up pretty good, but the Cloud blocks so much line of sight that he doesn't get charged by nearly the full unit.

Score: 1 - 0
Advantage Grymkin

Grymkin turn 4:

I'm able to kill off the rest of the Fennbades, Puppet Master the Dreamer, and Abyssal Gate the Earthborn way closer to me (I needed that Puppet Master too!) and my Skin and Moans murders himself an Earthborn.

I run the Death Knell to cover those two heavies and set up my Skin and Moans on the right to take the next charge, both of them at full now thanks to the Corpses they've been greedily chomping on.

A-mo makes his first tough check in there somewhere.

I score another point.

Score: 2 - 0
Advantage Grymkin

Trollbloods turn 4:

I lose a Skin and Moans on the far left, and A-mo decides the game is more or less over and charges Madrak into my heavies, hoping to cripple some aspects and grievous wounds.

Unfortunately, Madrak is dice off 5, and he only gets 4-5 attacks, and neither heavy is crippled.

Score: 2 - 0
Advantage Grymkin

Grymkin turn 5:

The Dreamer casts Manifest Destiny and puts a shot into Madrak, boosting and hitting and making him Stationary.

A-mo is gracious enough to let me score some army points, so I kill off his Mauler and score both flags.

The Cage Rager kills all of the trolls around Madrak by hitting him and forcing his sacrifice mechanic. His final attack disables the troll and A-mo fails his 22nd out of 23 tough checks.

Victory for the Grymkin!

Post-Game Thoughts:

A-mo's dice were bad, Rattlers are nuts, and I didn't take the bait turn 1. It always amazes me how resilient the super low model count Grymkin armies are on Scenario and how many models Rattlers ill under Dreamer.

On to round three!

(Sorry again for how sparse these were, I don't take notes and it's been 11 days!)
