Warmachine Hordes Grymkin Battle Report: Old Witch 3 VS Lord Carver, BMMD

There is no glory in practice, but without practice, there is no glory.

Well, I managed to sneak a 75 point game on Breakdown vs Kyle's Lord Carver BMMD, Esq III at Atomic Games West. I'm using an untested Old Witch 3 build. Kyles a great player who usually bludgeons people with Legion.

Let's get into the lists, and I'll explain my opening thoughts. Now is as good of a time as any to declare I am running 1 proxie. The old witch is getting some conversion love, so the giant empty base is her.

Pregame Thoughts

That's a lot of bacon. With Batten Down the Hatches, giving the pigs +3 armor it's going to be an ugly swing. Mobility helps get their threat to respectable ranges. I need to be sure to keep the Old Witch's base safe. I decide to take the Shadow arcana, oh wait...I'm playing Old Witch. I lose the roll and Kyle takes turn 1. Prey goes on the giant wheel of death, the Meat Thresher.

Deployment

Minions Turn 1

He runs, and by runs I mean FLIES. And by flies I mean PIGS FLY UP THE TABLE. Mobility plus the Will Work for Food Theme bonus means 18 inch runs on turn one. Crazy sauce. He leaves the right flank kind of light.

Pigs can fly! The boards been cut in half...

Grymkin Turn 1

I slowly walk up the table. I make sure the Old Witch is out of charge range, and don't give him an easy overtake into me. I blind all 3 Warpigs to make him spend some fury, respawn goes on the Cage Rager. The right runs hard to try to secure that zone early, I make some Cask Imps. I bait some Neigh Slayers up hoping stuff is in range of my Murder Crows ambush.

End of Round 1

Minions Turn 2

It hurts so much. He feats, and casts Batten Down the Hatches. A Warpig gets Primal, and charges the Neighslayer to overtake onto the Cage Rager. I STUPIDLY counter charge. This is a bad move for a lot of reasons, the biggest one being I basically give him a Rattler. I thought I could counter charge and get a free strike when he overtakes in, but I couldn't and should have checked before saying I was counter charging.

Rager dies, and respawns. Alten misses the kill shot on the Rager. Meat Thresher crashes in and kills some Neigh Slayers, tries to shoot the Rager down but fails. Road Hog kills a few more Neighs and finishes the Rager. Feralgeist is in the right zone behind the house. Scouts shoot and back up. He makes a bacon wall in front of Carver and passes it to me.

end of Minions turn 2

Grymkin Turn 2

I decide I can kill the Meat Threasher, and the Road Hog. I'll slap the War Hog but let him primal/frenzy and deal with him next turn.

Crows Ambush. Gorehound is able to kill Alten and sprints behind to give Carver something to think about. Old Witch blinds the Bacon wall and catches Lanyssa ensuring OW can't be charged this turn. I cast Curse of Shadows onto the Thresher and 'stomp' the Primal'd Warpig a little. I bring back some dead Neigh Slayers.

Everything charges. By everything, I mean all the Neigh's and the Murder Crows. The pigs are really hard to kill with Batten Down the Hatches. Neigh Slayers hate any arm buffs. For those of you who don't know Armor Piercing halves the base armor, then applies modifiers. So my pow 7AP is crashing into arm 18/2 (9) +3 (Batten) for a mediocre dice minus 5 damage roll.

I overkill the Thresher a little too much, I should have kept two crows back. I clear the Road Hog as well. Rots and Hollowmen push up the board. I forget about the damn Feralgeist and don't run the glimmer imp like I should. No one scores.

end of Round 2

Minions Turn 3

Those Murder Crows are in a perfect overtake line. He shakes blind on everything he can. Warpigs end up killing a bunch of infantry, he doesn't like the order of activation he'd have to do for the Battle Boars. The Boars and Grinders start trying to clear the middle zone. He gives up the right flank except for that damned Feralgeist. No one scores.

end of Minions turn 3

Grymkin Turn 3

Okay, We blind the Battleboar and clip Lanyssa with it. We feat for some dudes, and cheaper Boundless charge. We slap Curse of Shadows onto the engaged "blue" Warpig with Eilishe's help and stomp the close pig to death.

Neigh Slayers are able to swing down the pug with the help of some Crows. The right flank is mine, but that damned Feralgeist and I FORGET TO RUN THE GLIMMER IMP WHERE HE NEEDS TO GO AGAIN!

I feel like I win this fairly easily. I just need to not die, and just keep swinging.

end of Round 3

Minions Turn 4

It's not looking great for them at this stage. The OW is far enough back I'm not going to give him a charge. He sends in a battle boar and kills a lot of stuff, but some of the unit lives so they'll be back. Carver slaps the GoreHound a little, Gobber chef gets in on the action.

Grymkin Turn 4

I REMEMBER TO RUN THE DAMNED IMP. Despite my misplays, I'm going to win this game. We charge the near Warpig and nearly kill it. I go to finish it with the Longfellow and Kyle scoops so we can each get another game in. The Feralgeist never dies...

Recap

First I was impressed with Carver. That's a lot of really fast moving high arm pigs. I can see it catching a lot of people off guard. I think if he would have been more aggressive with throwing pigs at me he could have won. Or made the Old Witch retreat to the right flank at least.

Old Witch is solid. The turn I threw out 4 boundless charges and summoned back 3 dudes was a huge swing. I need to position better. Keeping her alive is a chore. All in all I like the list, but kind of want the sisters in it too. I missed Arcana a lot, but she might be worth ditching them. How are you guys doing with the Old Witch?

Be sure to like and follow me on Facebook and Twitter. I'll be giving away some swag at the end of the year to a few random followers, and the swag gets better the more followers I can muster. I've also been inspired by Arcane Assist and am starting to mess around with video battle reps. If you haven't checked out Arcane Assist you really should, super clean videos great way to experience casters. Are video battle reps something you guys would be interested in?
