Battle Report 139 - August Steamroller Round 2: The Dreamer (Menagerie) vs. Karchev (Jaws of the Wolf)


Adam is one of the players that you have to go through if you want to win an event in Spokane. He's solid, doesn't make a ton of mistakes, and also plays Khador which happens to be a very strong faction. 

He was playing Karchev with 8 heavies and Butcher 3 in Winterguard Kommand. 

I think I should have dropped the King of Nothing into this pairing, but I wimped out and played the Dreamer. 

He dropped Karchev. Unfortunately, the Scenario was Recon II, so this was perfect for him. 

I chose the Labyrinth (-2 speed) and Ill Omens (-1 to hit and damage) Arcana and did not ADR at all. If you've read the prologue for this event, you know that I built an incorrect ADR for this event and I should have had a Skin and Moans in the sideboard because I knew this matchup was coming. 

I lost the roll sadly, and ended up going second.

I definitely screwed up my deployment here - I would have, in hindsight, devoted one Gremlin Swarm to contesting his flag, but I was 1) really really full and half asleep and 2) scared to death of this matchup because as a Circle player, this was my worst nightmare

Khador turn 1:

It's a Khador turn 1. Road to War goes up and everything runs. 


Grymkin turn 1:

Pretty standard, Mirage goes up and so does Artifice of Deviation

I screw up here and put Karianna right next to a Cage Rager because, well, I forgot that Behemoth was there. 


Khador turn 2:

The Marksman kills a Rot and triggers Road to War on Behemoth. He moves up and lobs a shot at the Gremlin Swarm, which deviates to nowhere, and then blasts the Cage Rager but Karianna survives. 

He puts a War Dog on his flag and throws some heavies at me, keeping out of walk and apparition range of the Gremlin Swarms. 


Grymkin turn 2:

I put a Gremlin Swarm on my flag and then decide to try and Abyssal Gate Behemoth forward to kill him with a Skin and Moans. 

I fail to damage, so the Dreamer puts down Artifice of Deviation in front of his heavies. In hindsight, I think I could have positioned this better to prevent him from charging from nearly anywhere, but I didn't think about that at the time. (Artifice counts as rough terrain for enemy models)

I use the Twilight Sisters to heal Karianna to full, and position some Crabbits around them.

I charge his Kodiak on the left with a pair of Dread Rots and do about 10 damage (nice!) and we both score a point.

Khador turn 3:

My opponent blasts my Cage Rager with mighty fury from Behemoth. The Kodiaks on the left kill off all of my poorly positioned Dread Rots with Vent Steam. 

This allows him to Road to War his red Juggernaut up and it charges my Cage Rager, killing it. 

He scores twice.

Grymkin turn 4:

I need to kill four heavies this turn, and thanks to Manifest Destiny, I am able to. 

Skin and Moans with Enrage and Manifest Destiny tears Behemoth a new one, and then kill the Marauder next to him for good measure and makes a Phantasm. This was....definitely a mistake, I should have made it out of the Kodiak that my Cage Rager in the left zone killed and then used it to screen for him. 

Heck, I should have made ANY phantasm with that Kodiak so that I could have gone and contested his flag >< Growing pains with this list. 

My second Skin and Moans kills the Juggernaut in his face which lets me take the flag back.

Khador turn 4:

I have to hand it to my opponent, he realized this was a Scenario game before I did, and he started going after it. 

Karchev feated this turn, but thanks to DEF 13, he misses the Skin and Moans 3/6 of his attacks, barely killing it. 

His Kodiak goes into my Cage Rager and then throws it out of the zone. 

He scores two for my one.

Grymkin turn 4:

My Cage Rager frenzies into my Death Knell and CRANKS the damage roll. 

I am able to barely kill the Juggernaut with Gremlin Swarms, Dread Rots, and an Abyssal Gate, which makes a Large Phantasm and pushes his dudes out of the zone.

I contest his zone with a Crabbit and he scores one for my two.

Advantage Khador 

Khador turn 5:

My opponent rotates his Kodiak to kill the Crabbit and I trigger Labyrinth to give -2 speed out. 

This means that Karchev has to Arcantrik Turbine and charge the Objective, and that he only gets a couple attacks into it. 

Dice agree, and the objective dies. 

My opponent extends his hand and I ask him if his turn is over. 

He examines the table and then starts to move his Marksman before I remind him about Labyrinth. We look at the picture from last turn and get the solo where he was before, and it's a millimeter out of my Control Area, so it is able to run and contest my flag. 

My opponent scores 3 and takes the game. 


Sadly, a loss for the Grymkin...

Post-Game Thoughts:

I think this game is actually very playable on....basically any other Scenario. Artifice of Deviation allows me to seriously out threaten him, the Phantasm can sort of counteract Road to War, and Manifest Destiny makes my beasts tear his jacks apart. 

On a Scenario with fewer jack zones, like the previous game, I think this is a slightly favored matchup for the Dreamer. 

With some significant misplays on my part and some unlucky frenzies, I still felt like I had turned the corner on this game and was starting to get to the point where just recurring two Dread Rots every turn and using my remaining Gremlin Swarms to kill his jacks would have been viable. 

Next time, I'm going to make sure to check that models are in Dreamers control area before I finish her movement ;)
