Battle Report 154 - Attack X Round 4: The Heretic (Menagerie) vs. Absylonia 2 (Oracles)

For the final round of day 1, I was paired with a gentleman running Abby 2 and Twins. I knew he was likely to drop Abby, and I felt like the Wanderer was stronger, but there was no way to play that list on this scenario, so I dropped Heretic.

This game was also recorded, and when the full thing is available I will link it here. Fortunately, Tom Guan was hanging around and streamed most of the game. I was able to pillage the video off of Facebook, but I did not take any pictures.

I chose the Desolation and Ill Omens Arcana, won the roll, and went first.

Early Game:

Stuff runs. I bait out his battlegroup which has shifted way left with my Cage Rager.

He charges a Carnivean at it to try and soften it up for Abby to kill and trigger Alpha Hunter.

Instead, I do some quick math and drop a Desolation forest on top of the Carnivean to block Line of Sight to the Cage Rager from everything else.

The Carnivean rolls the hot dice needed to remove the Cage Rager on its own (about 20% chance) and opponent passes.

On my turn, a Skin and Moans kills it off. This is where the video picks up.

Mid Game:

Proteus comes in under Abby feat and Alpha Hunter and fails to kill my Skin and Moans. He missed one of his attacks, and so I trigger Ill Omens and now the Skin and Moans is DEF 14 ARM 22, which is a pretty darn good statline.

Edit: this was a mistake, I got the triggers between Ill Omens and Fortunes Path mixed up in my head. I've got no good excuse other than it was round four and my head was gone.

He commits multiple heavies to kill it.

I'm able to keep scoring even, and the next turn kill Proteus and most of the Seraph.

Late Game:

We trade points and models until he's down to a Neraph engaging my top Frightmare, a Sorceress, and Abby to my Skin and Moans, Crabbit, Frightmare, and Heretic.

I trample the Skin and Moans up through the forest to kill the Neraph, contest his zone with my Frightmare and score 12-10. He then kills the Frightmare with Abby and runs the sorceror to contest 12-12 at the end of turn 7.

I end up winning the game on the third tiebreaker, as I have destroyed more army points than he has.

This was a freaking incredible game, I highly recommend watching the video(s) if you have the chance.

Post-Game thoughts:

This matchup is a dumpster fire for Grymkin, only Arcana play kept me in the game until the end, coupled with some poor dice on my opponents part.

Again, I cannot emphasize how amazing of an opponent Cory was. Guy was an absolute pleasure to play against, even as I was terrified for my life most of the game.

At the end of the day, we cut to top four, and my legion opponent was able to make it in off his control points.

Final four were myself on Grymkin, Tim Banky on double Ghost Fleet, Cory on Abby and Twins, and a Skorne player playing Zaadesh 2 double turtle and Rasheth in Winds of Death.
