Battle Report 155 - Attack X Round 5: The Heretic (Menagerie) vs. Deneghra 1 (Ghost Fleet)

For day 2, we were not allowed to change our lists or our casters, and so I was still playing the same stuff as last time.

Furthermore, I was playing into Tim Banky of Arcane Assist fame (go check out his Youtube channel, dude has some great video reports up) on Deneghra 1 Ghost Fleet, which I've seen but never played against.

Suffice to say, I was nervous.

This game was not streamed, so I did take pictures! Also, my good friend Aaron Allen of the 4 man meta podcast (go check that out too) was streaming live to facebook the entire time and I was able to steal the footage.

I knew Tim was going to play Deneghra 1, and I also knew I had to play Heretic. I picked the Shroud and Sacrifice Arcana.

Tim won the roll off to go first thanks to the Ghost Fleet Bonus, and off we went!

Here's the video that Aaron took.

And here is deployment!

Cryx turn 1:

Everything ran, even Deneghra. Something that I see a lot of less experienced Deneghra players do is keep her way too far back turn 1. She often doesn't need to cast anything if she goes first and in this instance she had a fantastic house to hide behind all game.

Grymkin turn 1:

I advanced very cautiously, and I spent a good minute or two constructing Fort Heretic, verifying with Tim that a Stalker couldn't get to me from anywhere.

I screwed up the placement on the Rattler and left him 10.1 inches away from the Heretic, which proved to be very important.

Cryx turn 2:

Tim opts not to feat, but is able to kill off my Rattler with guns and a Venom. Deneghra hides behind the house. Tim sets up to score the left zone if I don't contest.

Grymkin turn 2:

I decide to kill Blackbane and the Hellslinger Phantom this turn.

Wraithbane on the Gorehound lets him kill off Blackbane and Sprint to engage dudes. The Frightmare misses its ten, so the Hellslinger lives.

I turtle up behind the house again, and contest the left zone with a Gremlin Swarm.

Cryx turn 3:

Here comes the feat!

I lose my left Cage Rager to Stalkers and Wraith Engine. I lose the Gorehound pretty severely, and my Gremlin Swarm in the left zone gets exploded.

Blackbanes jam me, and Tim positions models to prevent me from easily getting into the right zone.

Score: 0 - 1
Advantage Cryx

Grymkin turn 3:

Denny's feat is a giant punch in the face, but I'm able to kill his Wraith Engine with a Gremlin Swarm, Frightmare shot, and Skin and Moans.

The Heretic with Fury auto hits and kills a Stalker and half kills the other.

I Lurker my right Skin and Moans, and boost to hit on the two models barring him from the right zone. I miss the second boosted shot, so I can't contest.

I contest the left zone with a Crabbit.

Score: 0 - 1
Advantage Cryx

Cryx turn 4:

Tim has to keep Deneghra back because the Frightmares are still alive.

He charges my objective, leaving it on five or so. He then kills my Crabbit and I trigger Sacrifice to heal it and my Skin and Moans etc. up to full.

He has to commit almost all of his guys to kill the objective.

He clears the left zone and scores three points.

Score: 0 - 4
Advantage Cryx

Grymkin turn 4:

My Skin and Moans on the right Frenzies.

I am able to contest the right zone with a full health Cage Rager on full corpses, and the left zone with a Skin and Moans with the same.

I've also RFPed basically every model I've killed, so he doesn't get to do any recursion.

Score: 0 - 4
Advantage Cryx

Cryx turn 5:

He fails to clear any of my models out, but he does kill a Frightmare.

Tim is down to about five minutes on his clock at this point.

Score: 0 - 4
Advantage Cryx

Grymkin turn 5:

I kill nearly everything he has left and clear the central zone.

Cryx turn 6:

Tim tries a 50% assassination run that doesn't pan out, leaving the Heretic on two, corroded, with one transfer.

We were both down to very low clock at this point, so I didn't take a picture.

Score: 1 - 4
Advantage Cryx

Grymkin turn 6:

I kill everything he has left except Deneghra and the Cannon crew grunts and score two points. The Heretic is camping six or seven.

Score: 3 - 4
Advantage Cryx

Cryx turn 7:

Deneghra Ghost Walks and charges the Frightmare in the middle and left zones.

She kills it, Parasites the Skin and Moans, and then Tim clocks out.

Victory for the Grymkin!

Post-Game Thoughts:

I was trying really, really hard not to psyche myself out going into this game. Tim was a fantastic opponent, and he really embodies the idea that Warmachine players that are really excellent at the game are also really excellent people to play the game with.

I'm extremely impressed by Ghost Fleet - this was the first time I'd seen it on the table against me, and boy is it a scary list.

I'm proud of how I played this game. On to the finals!
