Battle Report 157: The Dreamer (Menagerie) vs. Issyria (Defenders)

Prologue:

I have a good friend from Australia who used to talk Circle with me all the time when we both played. I've moved to Grymkin, and he's moved to Ret, and he's been having excellent success with the faction in Australia, winning several state level events with a particularly potent Issyria list. 

Naturally, when one of my teammates for the upcoming i5 event wanted to play Ret, I had to suggest this list. 

A couple proxies on his side - Alexia 2 is Skareth Issyan, the Helios is an Arcantrik Force Generator, and the Mad Caps are Heavy Rifle Crews. 

His theoretical pairing right now is Rahn and Issyria, and mine is Dreamer and Wanderer. I cannot afford to drop the Wanderer into either of his lists, so Dreamer came down, as did Issyria. 

Edit in: I can't afford to play Wanderer into this matchup for a couple of reasons. For Issyria, The Wanderer's tech is basically useless. Star-Crossed doesn't matter against MAT 8-10 Halbs and Issyria's feat cancels it out. It also cancels out Fog of War

Further, my list gets outthreatened at basically every point. 

Against Rahn, he is too accurate and can reach out and assassinate the Wanderer or kill off the entirety of my army quite easily. 

The infantry are too vulnerable to his attacks compared to the beasts.

I chose the Sacrifice and Pandemonium Arcana and lost the roll off, giving him the side with all the rough terrain for his pathfinderless army to deal with.

Side note: check out that sweet house! I was able to get some of the 3d terrain Broken Egg sells to pretty up my tables, and I've picked up some trees to use on my forest templates - nothing but the best for you guys. Look, my army is even fully painted!

Retribution turn 1:

Everything runs at me. Admonition goes on Hemera and Inviolable Resolve goes on the Banshee. 

My opponent checks to see what AOEs I have when his left Halbs run, and then spaces it a bit on the right hand where my AOE actually is. 

 
 

Grymkin turn 1:

The Dreamer goes Incorporeal this turn since I know she's going to be up the table.

I use my Frightmare to kill three Halbs on the right and corrode two more. 

On the left, I prepare to receive his charge with a Miraged Rattler screened by a Cage Rager screened by Gremlin Swarms. 

On the right, I screen my Skin and Moans that is in the trench with some Gremlin Swarms and have a second one as back-up. 

 
 

Retribution turn 2: 

One corrosion rolls out. My opponent allocates one to each jack. 

Things start off with the right hand unit of Halbs attempting to Press Forward. I opt to Pandemonium that unit for a couple of reasons. First of all, I can't stop my opponent from Alphaing me, and I want him to kill the Cage Rager with his Feat and basically nothing else. Secondly, I think that the Frightmare will be important. 

Either way, three Halbs can walk up to the Frightmare, and some spiked damage leave it on about 5 boxes left. 

The Halbs repo in to jam me. 

On the left, Issyria Feats and then Ancillary attacks the Banshee to kill one Gremlin Swarm in front of the Cage Rager. 

It then activates and kills the other. 

Halbs all charge the Rager, killing it and redirecting three attacks into the Rattler. Dice off 6 even with Issyria's feat leaves it alive and happy. Repositions happen all over to try and prevent me from mowing through his army. 

Hemera walks up and puts some damage into a Skin and Moans, and the AFG does the same, although I shield guard at least one shot. 

 
 

Grymkin turn 2:

I upkeep Mirage and both the Rattler and the Gremlin Swarms apparate. 

The Dreamer moves back and Stationaries Skareth with a shot, casts Manifest Destiny, and camps three. 

A Crabbit unengages the Rattler, who goes in and murders basically the entire unit of Halbardiers on the left. My Cage Rager moves to the left, killing two more and unengaging Rose. 

My Gremlin Swarms move up one at a time, boxing Hemera in (she really had no good Admonition spots) and doing about 10 damage to her. 

The Damage Skin and Moans clears the path of the unhurt one, which gets max corpses from the Death Knell and Enraged by Rose. 

It charges Hemera, who can no longer Admonition anywhere useful and kills her with initials and a bought attack. I spawn a large based Phantasm and use it to bulldoze things out of the zone. 

The Frightmare regenerates and kills a Halbardier. 

I score a point.

Retribution turn 3:

My opponent uses his AFG to Knock Down and then damage up my Skin and Moans. 

His Banshee gets Concentrated Power and charges in, killing the poor beast. I trigger Sacrifice off of that. 

His Rifle teams take shots at my other Skin and Moans, but they're dice off 7 or so, and do nothing. 

His other models dance around in the zones, with Skareth still Stationary.

Grymkin turn 3:

I am able to kill off his models in the left zone bar one Halb with the Rattler. An enraged Skin and Moans with Manifest Destiny and corpse tokens kills the Banshee with initials, and so my Gremlin Swarms move up and do 10 damage to the AFG. 

The Frightmare moves up and kills a Rifle Team and some things around it, so I Spawn a medium phantasm and use it to contest on the other side of the forest.

Retribution turn 4:

My opponent has a Rifle Team Shot, two AFG shots, and a charge from a Thane into my Skin and Moans, which fails to kill it spectacularly. 

My opponent thinks about it and then concedes so we can get more games in.

Post-Game Thoughts:

Gremlin Swarms and Crabbits continue to make this list extremely resilient to gunlines. My opponent and I both made some interesting (read, incorrect) plays here, notably not spreading out on his part and not using Artifice of Deviation to deny charges on mine. 

A very interesting game - Ret remains one of the factions that I am genuinely concerned about as a Grymkin player.
