Warmachine and Hordes Grymkin Battle Report: The Dreamer (Menagerie) vs. Kromac 2 (Call of the Wild)

Alright guys, I've got a huge backlog of battle reports to write up! Most of these are from Las Vegas Open, and that means it's been over a month since I played them. I'll do my best to remember pertinent details, but no promises!

This report was a pick up game with a very kind gentleman named Dan who is an avid listener of Line of Sight and a tremendous painter. I don't think I took any pictures of his models, but holy smokes these were some of the most gorgeous Circle models I have ever seen.

He had a Kromac 2 list approved by Mr. Pagani himself, and he asked to play into Grymkin so I played the Dreamer.

Dan won the roll off and opted to go first (which is the right thing to do in this scenario), and I chose the side with the rough terrain to give myself some protection from Ghetorix and the Feral.

In addition to my trump Arcana All Fall Down, I chose Ill Omens and Ruin.

Circle Turn 1:

Everything runs at me. Kromac puts Awakened Spirit on a Stalker so that it can cast Lightning Strike for free, and Vengeful on Ghetorix for retaliatory strike.

Grymkin Turn 1:

He can't charge me with anything except the Scarsfell Griffon if I run full distance this turn, so it makes sense to do that. I stick out Mirage on a Skin and Moans and an Artifice of Deviation to put my Skin and Moans in so that Hunters Mark is really hard (needing 10s), and I put my Rattler up on the left in charge range of his Stalker because I'm more than okay trading my 8 point light for that heavy.

Everything else basically moves up.

Circle turn 2:

It's a bit of a stalemate here, since with Abyssal Gate I can outthreat most of his heavies, so Dan decides to pop Kromac's feat and throw his army at my face with a bunch of chaff in the way.

A clever line of Shifting Stones, Valkyries and a Blackclad gums me up, and a Scarsfell with Primal and Kromac's feat does some good damage to my front Skin and Moans.

The right zone has a Blackclad contesting wayyy in the back, and the left zone has one of my Gremlin Swarms chilling out behind the building so the Scenario is basically flat this turn.

Grymkin Turn 2:

I see an opportunity to alpha decisively here, but it all depends on killing the Scarsfell with my Rattler. I can't have my front Skin and Moans go into Ghetorix with Vengeful because he's only got about a dozen boxes left and a retaliatory strike will definitely cripple something.

This means he needs to go into the central Stalker and the back one has to go into Ghetorix.

With that in mind, Karianna enrages my Rattler, the Dreamer casts Manifest Destiny, and the Rattler is able to kill the Scarsfell.

My other Rattler ping pongs down the line of Shifting Stones, boosting damage at dice off 5 and killing in one hit most of the time thanks to Manifest Destiny

This clears a lane for my front Skin and Moans to go in and kill the center Stalker. He's got an attack left over, so he whacks Ghetorix, who then retaliatory strikes and takes out his body.

The other Skin and Moans gets a couple corpses from the Death Knell and is able to kill Ghetorix thanks, once again, to Manifest Destiny. Making sure you hit those sevens is clutch.

Lastly, I check, and I can bulldoze the back Stalker forward with the Phantasm spawned from the other Stalker, so I do that and the Cage Rager is able to barely take the Warpwolf down.

I throw a TON of models in front of my back Skin and Moans and score a point.

Score: 1 - 0
Advantage Grymkin

Circle turn 3:

By this point, Pagani, Chandler, and I are all trying to figure out optimal plays for Dan to make (with his blessing, we didn't just all butt in on his game), and we actually find a play that puts me in a bit of a pickle.

The Valkyries kill off my middle Skin and Moans and a spray from the Blackclad kills off most of my Screening models, and I pop lll Omens somewhere in here to make my remaining models essentially +1 ARM and DEF.

This is completely negated by the Wild Argus charging in and casting Doppler Bark which makes my Skin and Moans DEF bad. Kromac charges in and cripples Mind and Spirit on it and the Feral comes around to threaten my entire zone.

All of a sudden, I have a useless heavy, a heavy that's too far away from Dan's models to matter, and Kromac 2 RIGHT NEXT to the Dreamer, which is never what she wants to see.

Unfortunately, Dan cannot quite get into the zone with any of his models, so I get to score again.

Score: 2 - 0
Advantage Grymkin

Grymkin turn 3:

Mirage enables my Skin and Moans to get out of melee without taking free strikes, and I debate running it away, jamming with the Death Knell and trying to reclaim the attrition game.

Then I check some measurements and see that the Cage Rager can get to the objective and the Druid Wilder, which means that if he can kill both I win instantly.

Unfortunately, this is as all or nothing as a caster kill since I have to move the Dreamer up to cast Manifest Destiny and keep the Rager in control. If this doesn't work, I lose almost guaranteed.

The Dreamer moves up and casts Manifest Destiny. The Rager charges the objective and then boosts a hit into the Druid Wilder and misses

I've got two fury left, so I buy one attack into the Wilder which hits and kills her, and then the third bought attack finishes off the objective and I score 3 points to win the game.

Victory for the Grymkin!

Post-Game Thoughts:

Kromac 2 is one of my favorite Circle Warlocks, and I love this list! I can't wait to see what the point costs of all the beasts look like after CID this fall/late summer/whenever it happens. My only complaint here is that there isn't a Storm Raptor...

Looking back at the game, Dan and I both agreed that he was too aggressive with his placement on turn 2. He hadn't experienced the madness that is Grymkin damage output under the Dreamer and thought that the high DEF plus the ARM 19 would be enough.

There's certainly something to be said about a caster that can kill heavies and has Grievous Wounds on his weapon. Kromac is such a beast! On that last turn, looking back at it, I think I could have been just fine with the Cage Rager only killing the objective if I'd been smart and had the Dreamer just run into the left hand zone after going incorporeal. I didn't need to be relying on killing a DEF 14 solo with a MAT 6 beast.

I really enjoyed this game, Dan was a great opponent and it was a lot of fun dojoing out moves with him, Chandler, and Will.

And seriously, those models are so freaking gorgeous. I may need to get him to do up an article for us sometime...

Thanks for reading :)
